Vimeo Staff Pick: I was interested in what a coming-of-age might feel like to a kid in a town outside of London during the ‘Age of Austerity’. A surreal transition from the expectation of childhood to the exhilaration of emerging adulthood to the quiet realisation that fulfilling your dreams in modern Britain is perhaps an impossibility. The talent, promise and character I encountered amongst the youth in Huddersfield was overwhelming. Really bright kids with big dreams and little infrastructure to realise them. It makes you the wonder what genius is slipping through the net. “Soul-Stealing” Photos Visualize the Dependence We Have to Our Phones

1

Our eyes are all-too-often glued to our phones and we miss what’s going on in the world around us. The alluring and tempting images light up the screen, grabbing hold of our gaze as we’re powerless to look away. French photographer Antoine Geiger has visualized this parasitic relationship in his series called ‘SUR-FAKE’. In each of his compelling compositions, a phone and face are fused into one, as its user is absorbed into the illuminated device.

Geiger views the phone as an object that alienates our connection to the physical world. By paying attention to it, we miss spontaneous interactions with others and the beauty of the everyday. Although his photographic manipulations are alarming and, at times, grotesque, they act as a powerful reminder to put our phones away—they can’t compete with what’s going on around us.

Vimeo Staff Pick: Ramiro Gomez’s parents are Mexican…

Vimeo Staff Pick: Ramiro Gomez’s parents are Mexican immigrants—his mother works as a janitor and his father is a Costco truck driver. Growing up in the Los Angeles area, he was always aware of the invisibility of the area’s domestic laborers. Now, as an artist represented by the Charlie James Gallery, Gomez paints these workers and places their figures in scenes of L.A. luxury. “It’s my interest to showcase the other side of things, the more real side that I see, which is the people maintaining those mansions,” he says in this documentary produced by Kelly Loudenberg for The Atlantic’s American Dreams series. “I hope that these paintings showcase that their labor meant something to me and it meant something to society.”

Poland’s Mysterious “Crooked Forest” Populated with 400 Bent Pine Trees

1

Located just outside of Nowe Czarnowo, West Pomerania, Poland, there lies a pine grove known as the “Crooked Forest.” It is one of the most unusual forests in Central Europe. What makes this grove of approximately 400 trees so bizarre is that instead of growing naturally, each tree is bent at 90 degrees near the base, causing a wide arc to the top.

Stranger still, all stems are bent in the same direction: due North. The pines were planted around 1930, and to this day there is no definitive answer as to why the trees are so oddly shaped.

It is generally accepted that some form of human tool or technique was used to bend the trees, though method and motive are unknown. There has been speculation that the trees were deformed to create curved timber that could be used for furniture or boat building.

Another theory is that a snowstorm knocked the trees askew, though the real story behind the mysterious forest has never been revealed. The peculiar pines and the mystery behind their curved spines has led to a range of rumours in the depths of the internet, from witchcraft to energy fields. Whatever the cause, the forest makes for an ominous spectacle, captured in all its spooky glory by photographer Kilian Schönberger.
