If Disney Characters Used Instagram, This Is What You’d See

1

Like many of us, freelancer Italian illustrator Simona Bonafini grew up with all manner of childhood characters from Hercules, Alice In Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty to Cinderella and Aladdin.

But whilst their animated debuts captured the imagination of millions around the world several decades ago, imagine if they were released today. You wouldn’t find them in comic books or graphic novels – you’d find them on Instagram taking all manner of selfies and photos with their fictional friends.

That was all the inspiration Bonafini needed to create a series of illustrations which encapsulate just that – all the traits and characteristics of our favourite childhood heroes played out for all to see on Instagram. Naturally Hercules is all about his six-pack, just as much as Aladdin is obsessed with taking those couples selfies with Princess Jasmine.

It’s a fun and gorgeously illustrated look at two worlds colliding – the animated heroes of old with ongoing rise of our digital world.

19 Giant Flower Sculptures Honour Van Gogh At World’s Largest Flower Parade In The Netherlands

1

Another year, another Corso Zundert, the legendary parade of giant floats adored with thousands of dahlia flowers that twist through the narrow streets of Zundert, Netherlands. This year 19 teams took inspiration from the work of Vincent van Gogh who was born in Zundert 162 years ago. The towering floats borrow colors, motifs, and imagery from van Gogh’s painting including several interpretations of the artist’s self-portraits.

Started in 1936, the parade celebrates the region’s reputation as a global supplier of dahlia flowers, an area now covering 33 hectares (81 acres) of 600,000 dahlia bulbs in fifty different species. The first Corso Zundert parades were modest in size featuring horse-drawn carts or bicycles covered in flowers, but the event has since grown dramatically. The floats now merge more ambitious aspects of contemporary/urban art with traditional parade floats as part of a friendly annual competition. You can see plenty more photos over on BN DeStem.

A Controversial New Ad Shows Female Tech Founders And CEOs Coding In Their Underwear

1

With its brand-new Ada Collection — named after Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer—underwear company Dear Kate is taking a rather non-traditional approach to advertising.

The lookbook for the lingerie line shows six prominent women in tech posing with computers and coding while undressed down to their underwear.

The photos are meant to be empowering, complete with quotes from the women about their roles in the tech industry.

Dear Kate founder and CEO Julie Sygiel said she intentionally placed the models in the workplace. The shoot took place in Refinery29’s New York City headquarters.

“I think a lot of traditional lingerie photo shoots depict women as simply standing there looking sexy. They’re not always in a position of power and control,” Sygiel said to Time. “In our photo shoots it’s important to portray women who are active and ambitious. They’re not just standing around waiting for things to happen.”

But some people have found the campaign offensive, with feminists arguing that the photos place emphasis on looks in an industry that is already fraught with sexual abuse and misogyny.

“Posing in your underwear undermines the message that you aim to be taken seriously as a technologist,” Elissa Shevinsky, CEO of Glimpse Labs, said to Time.

On the other hand, Skillcrush cofounder and CEO Adda Birnir said she didn’t think twice when Dear Kate asked her to participate in the photo shoot.

“I think it’s an amazing company that has a truly integrated, feminist point of view, and I wanted to help support them in everything they do,” Birnir said to Business Insider.

She calls the controversy interesting and surprising, adding that it creates a conversation that is important to have.

Rebecca Garcia, founder of GeekGirlWeb, didn’t expect the shoot to be so controversial.

“I think highlighting women and their careers, their background stories like Dear Kate has done is important for women to see others like themselves that they can relate to,” she said to Business Insider. “It’s body positive and inspiring and I’m excited to be a part of the lookbook.”

“I’m friends and acquaintances with several women who have been affected by sexism in tech,” she said. “I have faced discrimination, ageism, not being taken seriously as a programmer, and I think this shoot helps to normalize the idea that women can be comfortable in their own skin and be in technology.”

Boiler Lamp Collection

boilerseries_willemheeffer005

Willem Heeffer’s Boiler Lamp collection is the first element of his new project The City as a Mine.

This research project explores potential uses for various residue from local factories in Helsinki.

It will result in a series of interior objects as well as an extensive catalog of industrial waste materials, including information about their specific properties and production methods. The aim is to turn trash into a resource into treasures – letting Heeffer’s recycled products pave the way for a larger movement.

The Boiler Lamp collection consists of pendants and floor lamps made out of boilers from discarded espresso machines. It is a collaboration with the Paulig coffee factory.

After ten years of producing coffee, the boilers are finally transformed into lamps, each tagged with the name and the serial number of the machine where they originate from. In fact, the first boilers in the collection had barely left the factory when Paulig decided to purchase them back as lamps.

Heeffer’s copper boiler lamps come with a matt powder coating on the exterior, which contrasts with the shimmering beat blasted finish inside. The shades measure 18 cm in diameter and are available in various heights. They present playful, asymmetrical hole formations, based on the original piping. The floor lamps and the smaller steel pendants are also powder coated with a matt finish. Likewise, their brass nuts and fittings derive from their roots in the field of coffee making.
