Fully Tattooed, This Young Polish Man Is A Real-Life White Walker

With his body 90% tattooed in gray, including his eyes, and a white dyed beard, Adam Curlykale has become a true White Walker, thanks to an impressive series of body modifications.

It was after battling cancer, which left indelible marks on his body and his skin, and to fight against post-traumatic depression, that this Polish man began to regain possession of his appearance by initiating a long process of transformation. If he is 90% covered with tattoos today, he expects to reach 99% soon.

“Tattoos allowed me to discover myself again. I became beautiful to myself. I design my tattoos because it’s my body. I have a specific vision for myself and I do it step by step. Life is so short that I stopped wondering what will happen tomorrow. Life is here and now,” he says.

“The Chronicle Of Unregistered Processes”: Contemporary Social Art By Mila Arbuzova

Mila Arbuzova spent her childhood in the downtown of Saint Petersburg. Her family lived in a block of flats in Grazhdanskaya Street where, according to Dostoevsky’s famous novel “Crime and Punishment”, the old female moneylender killed by Rodion Raskolnikov used to live.

In Soviet times guides often showed foreigners the place where the legendary murder occurred. Maybe this location of the native house made an influence on the future artist. The art work of Mila Arbuzova is essentially “Saint-Petersburg’s”: lyrical, strict, sometimes – tragicomocal, philosophical, serious and absurdist in the same moment. It includes a wide range of subjects: the sarcastic sketches in the spirit of “social art” as well as the magical fantastic pictures together with free compositions combining parts of realistic images in a surrealistic manner.

“Fragments Of The Past”: The Superb Contemporary Industrial Paintings By Pavel Otdelnov

Pavel Otdelnov was born in 1979 in Dzerzhinsk (Nizhny Novgorod region, Russia). Member of Moscow Union of artists since 2006.

“One of the questions that I am interested in is how to grasp the present. Contemporaneity is an assemblage that is built from the fragments of the past, it appears only post factum. The image of the past can be easily reconstructed through objects and style of that period. In contrast, the present has no image. It is slipping away from detection by hiding behind triviality of the mundane, and thus becomes indecipherable. I see the opportunity to capture the present by looking at it in the mode of a time-lapse photography technique. I believe that by slowing down a gaze, I could pronounce the movement of the reality that is subtly unfolding in front of our eyes, such as the construction of highways and shopping malls, the erection of cities, and the appearance of new light sources that navigate an urban dweller in a megapolis.

I see the static quality of painting as another opportunity to slow down a gaze and reveal a slice of moving time. Painting encapsulates time by accumulating layers of paint, and as a result it stimulates contemplation and decelerates a viewer’s look. My own gaze on the everyday is an important source of reflection for me. For example, I could catch an image of the everyday in the reflection of a room’s interior in a window glass. Another source to see the everyday is through a mechanical viewpoint of technological devices such as a photo camera or Google maps panoramas. The viewpoint of the technology points to the subjectivity of a gaze and questions a position of a viewer in relation to my painting or installation. In my work I imply the presence of people, however I never depict a human image. In fact, facing my painting viewers see their absence.”

Artist George Pfau Makes Impressionist Paintings Of The Zombie Apocalypse

San Francisco-based artist George Pfau is more obsessed with zombies than you are. He is so enamored with them, that they are his muse for Impressionist paintings. What lily gardens were to Monet, iconic undead apocalypse scenes are to Pfau in a series titled “Zombiescapes.”

Pfau selected the Impressionist style of painting for two reasons: nostalgia and its expressive value. Pfau’s father had a passion for Impressionism and Pointillism, Alfred Sisley in particular, and Pfau grew up admiring and studying these paintings. Pfau’s oil paints ooze into the background scenes, just as zombies do. The brush stroke technique that creates the hazy quality is only partially controlled by the painter, and takes on a life of its own, allowing the zombies to melt into the setting.

The Dark, Cyberpunk And Fantasy Paintings Of Jakub Rebelka

Jakub Rebelka’s work is like a cross between a stained-glass window and a colorful manga — it’s timeless, in a way, with a flat, intricately detailed style, but it also blurs the line between science fiction and fantasy in a way that’s absolutely gorgeous. Drawing is about the only thing he ever imagined doing; Rebelka’s illustrations have been featured in comic books and video games, but he says his favorite piece is whatever he’s working on at the moment.

“I am experiencing my illustrations only while creating them,” he explains, “after I forget about it.”

Growing up in Poland, Rebelka drew inspiration from a huge range of sources, everyone from iconic French comic artist Moebius to Akira artist Katsuhiro Otomo to Polish painter Stanislaw Szukalski. But the big names weren’t the most important influence on his career.

“My father is an amazing artist,” says Rebelka, “he taught me all.”

This broad range of influences has led to a distinct look, one that jumps between different styles at ease; his work can feel like a classic painting by way of Japanese and French comic artists. Like many artists, he uses a combination of real world techniques — in his case, acrylic paints and water colors — in addition to digital tools like Photoshop. His late night illustration sessions are fueled primarily by music and audiobooks.

“I spend a lot of time behind the desk drawing,” he says.
