Green 3D Printer Prints Living Designs From Organic “Ink”

    1

Project PrintGREEN is turning 3D printers into on-demand gardeners after designing a “green” 3D printer in 2013. The printer produces living prints, printing customized objects in a variety of sizes and forms. The project was created at the University of Maribor in Slovenia, conceived of by students Maja Petek, Tina Zidanšek, Urška Skaza, Danica Rženičnik and Simon Tržan, with help from their mentor Dušan Zidar. The project’s goal is to unite art, technology, and nature, creatively producing living designs with the help of technology.

The “ink” in the machine is a combination of soil, seeds, and water which can be designed to print in any shape or letter. After drying, the muddy mixture holds its form and begins to sprout grass from the organic material. PrintGREEN’s slogan is a twist on the old conservationist motto, “think before you print,” telling their audience to “print, because it is green.” You can follow the project’s progress on their Facebook page here.

    The Lexus Hoverboard In Photos

    1

According to Sam Sheffer of The Verge: “Last month, Lexus invited The Verge out to Spain to see and ride its actual, functional, honest-to-goodness hoverboard. The board — about 20 pounds of wood, plaster, and science — was created for an ad campaign, and works with a combination of liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and magnets. It levitates about an inch and a half above the ground until the nitrogen evaporates, a process that takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on the weather.”

“I had the chance to ride the board, but in the few minutes I had with it, I managed to hover for just few feet at a time. Balance proved to be quite a challenge — because of the way the board works, it acts sort of like a tightrope and wobbles from side to side, which is a problem you don’t need to deal with on a traditional skateboard.”

“Sadly, this isn’t the hoverboard the world expected to get after watching 2015-era Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II. Sure, it works — but it’s not for sale, and even if it were, it’d be more trouble than it’s worth. Still, it just looks cool, and I had a blast trying it out.”

Surfing On A Dirt Bike, Because Everything Else Is Too Easy

    1

From Flyboards to Hoverboards, there are some crazy water rideables out there at the moment, but they pale in comparison to this wave-riding dirt bike built for DC Shoes and piloted by Australian stunt rider Robbie Maddison. Maddison, whose previous work includes filling in for James Bond during a chase sequence in ‘Skyfall’, took the modified bike out onto the waves of Tahiti to film the four-minute sequence below. The end result is frankly stunning, with the bike appearing to tear across the water as easily as a two-wheeled jet ski (although we’re sure there were plenty of crashes that didn’t make the final cut).

We don’t know much more about what went into the project, but DC Shoes is promising to release a behind-the-scenes film at some point in the future. Right now, we have to make do with the gorgeous pictures below and a teaser trailer, which contains a lot of shots of Maddison sinking slowly into the water. If riding a dirt bike on water is anything like riding a snowmobile (an activity known as water skipping or snowmobile watercross), then the most important factor is forward momentum: stop or slow down and you’re dead in the water. But who cares about going slow when there are waves to ride?
